Self-Inquiry (Ātma Vimarsha)

Self-Inquiry (Ātma Vimarsha)

26 Illuminations for the Awakening Soul

  1. The Responsibility of Human Birth
To be born human is not a privilege but a sacred responsibility. If one continues to act with cruelty, greed, or ignorance, what is the worth of this rare birth? Awaken your conscience—let your life be a temple of divine values.

  2. Divine Echoes from the Past
The karma of past misdeeds follows like an unbroken shadow. If left unacknowledged, it leads not just to individual downfall but collective ruin. The path of righteousness alone can safeguard the future of humanity.

  3. Abandoning Untruthful Vows
Vows that bind the soul in suffering or delusion must be released. Free your tongue from deceit, your hands from violence. May the Infinite Compassion forgive and redirect you to truth and freedom.

  4. Calling the Divine by Any Name
Be it “God,” “Christ,” “Mahitachitta,” or “Maunivarya”—every sincere invocation touches the same infinite. The Divine is not confined by labels; He dwells in the heart of all. We are His children—His essence is within us.

  5. The Machinery of Samsāra
This world, like a mechanical wheel, spins in endless loops of danger, desire, and destruction. Until wisdom becomes the axle and discernment the brake, it will never stop.

  6. True Vision Begins Within
Do not be deceived by appearances. Recognize the divine substratum in all creation. Until then, life is lived in the fog of illusion.

  7. The Tragedy of Ignorance
Ignorance leads to unwise choices, which in turn deepen suffering. Only when the principle of divine order is understood can inner and outer peace be found.

  8. Karma and Justice
Right and wrong are not decided by society’s whims but by the silent witness within. The suffering you endure may be the echo of forgotten actions. This is not punishment—it is divine justice unfolding.

  9. Universal Burdens, Shared Pain
All living beings carry karmic impressions from prior births. Suffering, then, is not accidental—it is inherited, a sorrow that seeks transcendence.

  10. The Fallen Glory of Humanity
Though proclaimed superior, man often sinks below the animals when enslaved by desire and selfishness. Without spiritual awakening, civilization itself becomes savage.

  11. Pride Without Purity Is Hollow
Pride in being human is meaningless unless one embodies the virtues that define humanity—compassion, restraint, awareness, and wisdom.

  12. The Delusion of the Body-Self
To identify with the body, senses, or mind is the root of all delusion. You are not the name you bear, but the eternal witness—the Self that observes all.

  13. The Ego: Architect of Suffering
Driven by ego and personal cravings, the individual turns from the light of truth and walks into shadows of his own making.

  14. The Incomprehensible Is Not Inaccessible
Just because the cause of all appears beyond intellect does not mean it cannot be known. True silence is not passive—it is the womb of insight born through deep inquiry.

  15. Definitions As Gateways to Clarity
Truth can be defined—not in dry language, but in living wisdom. As speech gives form to thought, so too must we define the Self to realize it meaningfully.

  16. Reality Beyond the Senses
Not all that is seen is real. The seeker must go beyond surface perception to grasp the truth veiled by appearances.

  17. The Mirage of Projection
The world, when seen through the veil of ignorance, is but a projected shadow. Forgetting the Self, man chases illusions and calls it reality.

  18. From Truth to Transformation
Losing touch with the true Self, one becomes what he is not—a distorted echo of divine potential. To forget the Self is to become something unrecognizable.

  19. The Search for Light
As one seeks the sun in the sky, so too must the seeker look within to discover the hidden light of the Self. The outward gaze must turn inward.

  20. The Depths of Samsāra
Worldly life is a vast pit where the ego falls endlessly. Self-knowledge is the only ladder that leads out.

  21. Hold Fast to True Knowledge
Let no ridicule or rejection shake your grip on truth. Even when the world mocks or misjudges, cling to knowledge until you are free.

  22. The Sin of Forgetfulness
Once I declared that “knowledge is my very Self,” but I forgot. Caught in the web of sensations and identity, I abandoned my own light.

  23. The Meaning of Real Knowledge
Knowledge is not information—it is realization. It does not rest in books or professions but in the direct, lived awareness of who you are.

  24. Question with Humility, Receive with Openness
Inquiry is sacred only if you are willing to receive its answer. True wisdom does not inflate ambition—it dissolves it.

  25. You Are the Totality
The universe is not outside of you. You are its witness, its canvas, its very essence. Realize this and your sense of separation will end.

  26. The End of Duality Is the Beginning of Truth
When you dissolve the distinction between “I am” and “this is,” between subject and object, you stand face to face with your true nature—the undivided Self.
